As one travels down the Ashepoo past the South Edisto “cut through” allowing the Intracoastal Waterway to reach St Helenas Sound, numerous islands and hummocks are seen rising up out of the generous marshes, allowing trees to get a threshold above the high tides. Some of these risings in the marsh are natural islands and some appear to be leftover piles of mud left from the cutting of the Intracoastal Waterway years ago.Red Cedars do well on these mounds and islands as do various sizes of Palmettos. This westward view, during high tide, in late afternoon reveals a bright orange sky, silhouetting the palmettos which grow there.
